ACM Bandung Chapter and PPTIK ITB Hold FGD on Privacy-Preserving Intelligent Video Surveillance for Urban Development and Public Safety

Bandung, Indonesia — ACM Bandung Chapter, in collaboration with the Center for Information and Communication Technology Research, Institut Teknologi Bandung (PPTIK ITB), successfully organized a Focus Group Discussion (FGD) entitled “Privacy-Preserving Intelligent Video Surveillance System Innovation for Urban Development and Public Safety in Indonesia.” The event was held on Wednesday, May 13, 2026, at the Auditorium of the CRiMSE Building, Level 8, Institut Teknologi Bandung.

The FGD served as a strategic forum to discuss the development of intelligent video surveillance systems that can support urban development and public safety while maintaining strong principles of privacy protection, data security, ethical governance, and responsible artificial intelligence implementation. The event brought together academics, researchers, practitioners, government representatives, and stakeholders from various institutions to exchange perspectives on the future of AI-enabled surveillance technologies in Indonesia.

The event was officially opened with remarks by Prof. Andriyan Bayu Suksmono, M.T., Ph.D., Chair of ACM Bandung Chapter. In his opening speech, he emphasized the importance of developing intelligent surveillance technologies that are not only advanced in terms of computing and artificial intelligence, but also responsible, secure, and aligned with public interest. He also highlighted the role of ACM Bandung Chapter in supporting knowledge exchange, professional collaboration, and the advancement of computing research that addresses real-world societal challenges.

The event was hosted by Prof. Dr. Ir. Y. Bandung, S.T., M.T., Head of PPTIK ITB, who underlined the strategic importance of interdisciplinary collaboration in advancing AI-based surveillance research, smart city innovation, and urban digital ecosystem development in Indonesia.

The discussion featured several distinguished speakers from academia and government institutions, namely:

The speakers delivered perspectives on various strategic topics, including artificial intelligence implementation in public surveillance systems, privacy-preserving technologies, cybersecurity and data governance, smart city infrastructure readiness, urban safety challenges, and policy frameworks for the responsible deployment of surveillance technologies.

Throughout the discussion sessions, participants actively exchanged ideas and insights regarding the challenges and opportunities of implementing intelligent surveillance technologies in Indonesia. Several key points emphasized during the discussion included the need to ensure that surveillance innovation remains aligned with ethical AI principles, regulatory compliance, public accountability, and community trust.

The event also demonstrated strong interdisciplinary interest in intelligent urban systems. Participants came from various institutions, including Institut Teknologi Bandung, Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia, Badan Riset dan Inovasi Nasional, Institut Teknologi Nasional Bandung, and several other universities and research institutions. Based on the registration data, the event attracted approximately 34 registered participants from multidisciplinary backgrounds related to artificial intelligence, intelligent systems, urban development, cybersecurity, and digital governance.

In addition to strengthening academic and research collaboration, the FGD served as an important platform for ACM Bandung Chapter and PPTIK ITB to explore future opportunities in the development of privacy-preserving intelligent video surveillance systems tailored to Indonesia’s urban and societal needs. The activity is expected to contribute to future research initiatives, strategic partnerships, and innovation roadmaps related to smart public safety systems, urban digital transformation, and responsible AI implementation in Indonesia.
